Community to discuss impacts of proposed coal terminal
Learn "The Coal Hard Truth" about the terminal proposed for Cherry Point near Bellingham on Thursday, July 7th, beginning at 7 pm at the Lincoln Theater in Mount Vernon.
Diesel exhaust, coal dust, noise, traffic delays, and more carbon emissions are just some of the likely impacts if the Gateway Pacific Terminal gets the green light to go ahead with the project.
If you think this is Bellingham's problem, think again. Twenty 1.5-mile-long trains every day for decades would travel through the Skagit Valley to ship coal from Wyoming to Asia. "[Wyoming's] Powder River basin is one of the earth's great carbon bombs, and the fuse seems to run through Cherry Point," says author and environmentalist Bill McKibben.
